Web-dominion - what can we do for you?

The aim of this page is to demonstrate graphics and the impact they have on website design. As a result some of the images are very big by website design standards so you may have to wait for the images to download. Please be patient.

Website graphics and images

When it comes to graphics there are a number of general points to consider.
The first point is that not all users will view your website through the same size screen - more commonly referred to as screen resolution. Screen resolution is the fundamental concept that guides screen graphics. When Web-dominion design sites for clients we start with a realisation that the visitor to the site may well be only viewing the site in an 800 x 600 screen view (we have to exclude mobile users for obvious reasons - we will cover this at the bottom). When developing a site for a small screen viewers it also has to be remembered that at the other end of the spectrum, visitors to your site may well use large screen resolutions. The other factor when it comes to screen graphics is down to presentation. Often graphics are "migrated" onto the Internet from printed mediums. As discussed in the section about fonts, what works well in print often does not reproduce well on screen.

Another point you should understand is regarding the quality of the graphics used. When a user is viewing the website they are downloading from our server to their machine each of the images that will make up your webpage. If you opt for very high quality graphics, then the images that make up the website will be bigger - thus take longer to download. If you choose to opt for a faster downloading site then the files that contain the images will be smaller but there is a loss of quality.
Below are some demonstration images, which you may have to wait to download Starting at the top you can see a highly compressed graphic file - whilst at the bottom is the image in high quality.

Animated website graphics

This is a question that clients often ask us about, and its one Web-dominion has mixed views about!
The first point we always start with is cost - we often ask our clients to think about what they could do with the funds they invest into animated graphics.
On many occasions it is often better for a client to invest the "saved" funds into other areas of the website (additional functionality - such as online catalogues), or traditional marketing to supplement the website.
We also always make our customers understand that animated graphics are also a trade off between how good you would like something to look and how long your customers are prepared to wait.

As a demonstration for you we have prepared three files - one highly optimised to download in 12 seconds on a slow connection and two other files (of higher quality) that will take up to a minute to download.
If you are prepared to wait a little while you will be able to compare the three images and see the compromise between quality over download speed.

WAP graphics

We have created graphics for some of our clients with WAP* sites. WAP however is a technology that is even more difficult to design graphics for than usual Internet situations. When it comes to WAP we tend to advise clients to work in monotone colours to help make sure more phones can understand the image.
A lot can be achieved - but you should also be aware of the limitations placed on the technology.

* WAP = Wireless Application Protocol (Mobile phones and other devices.)
